Tips/Tricks & To Do’s
1 to 3 Monthly “to-do” list
- Test smoke alarms on the first or last day of the month.
- Test carbon monoxide detector during heating season.
- Change furnace filter once a month during heating season or clean re-usable filters.
- Check no combustibles (laundry, paper, paint, solvent, etc.) are near your furnace or hot water heater and the area is tidy.
- Vacuum heating grills, dryer filter slot & surrounding area regularly to keep free of dust and lint.
- Keep all heating vents clear of obstructions for longer furnace life.
Consumer Alert!
- Beware of phone call pitches for heating duct cleaning paired with furnace cleaning and service “at attractive prices”, cautions B.C.’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
- Furnace cleaning and service should only be carried out by a qualified and licensed gas fitter as required by the Gas Safety Act.
- Well-informed consumers should check with the Better Business Bureau.
Tip: Unless you have been renovating or have another heavy dust source, you should not need ducts cleaned regularly. Purchase quality furnace filters and replace or clean them in a regular basis.
